Kinship Care

According to the African proverb – “It takes a village to raise a child”.  Throughout history, grandparents and other relatives have stepped in when families are in crisis and have provided full-time care for their relatives’ children.  However, most have done so with little or no formal help.

Lack of support can compound an already fragile situation and lead to stress that impacts the entire family.  In Pinellas and Pasco counties, the Kinship Care Program is designed to provide support to relative caregivers by helping families access needed services, expand family support systems, and ultimately reduce stress to promote safe and stable families. In addition, a multitude of resources exist to help support grandparents and other relative caregivers.
